Interview Sarah McLean
“Photography is about trying to capture a feeling, a moment or a sense.”

Name: Sarah McLean
Hometown: South East London, UK
Cameras: I basically stick to 35mm film, mainly using a Canon EOS 300 – a light, consumer SLR. My boyfriend recently gave me a lovely Pentax ME Super which is so nice to use. I have a cute little Olympus Trip-35 which is great to take parties and on holidays. Oh, and I love disposables.

What gives you inspiration?
Visiting new places, buildings, empty space, finding patterns everywhere, light.
What are your influences?
My friends are my biggest influences. I know some incredibly talented people who make some really wonderful things: photographs, paintings or who are wonderful writers or have exciting imaginations. The internet is also a brilliant resource. Websites like Flickr give me access to so many amazing photographs every day. It can be overwhelming, but at its best it’s really inspiring.
Why did you choose these photos?
It was a struggle to choose just four because I take so many photos and I am very fickle! I picked these at random, but I think they’re all good examples of the kind of photos I take, and the subject matter that usually inspires me.
What does photography mean to you?
It is about trying to capture a feeling, a moment or a sense of being which is fleeting and completely unique to the particular space or place I am in. With each photograph I take, I hope that it will still contain or prolong the essence of those feelings in some way and that other people will sense that too.
