Interview Marleen Sleeuwits

Photography for me is a way to show our normal surroundings in a new way.

Name: Marleen Sleeuwits
Hometown: Den Haag (The Hague), The Netherlands
Camera: 8 x 10 inch camera

What gives you inspiration?

I find my inspiration in the urban environment. Especially the claustrophobic atmosphere that I find daily in many places, but at the same time I am also in search of a magical beauty. It is this point of friction between the two that I find so interesting. This feelings of confliction that I have toward certain spaces in the urban / cityscape are if you are separated from the real place and time, but at the same moment, experiencing the beauty of the place itself.

What are your influences?

I think I am mostly influenced by Thomas Demand, Lynne Cohen and Rene Magritte.

Why did you choose these photos?

It’s my latest series of work and it gives a good impression of what I’m doing.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography for me is a way to show our normal surroundings in a new way.
