Interview Marek Wykowski

Photography is an outlet for my creative forces.

What gives you inspiration?

My lonesome vagabonding, when I have the time to contemplate the world around me, and after two hours or so of wandering around I start to perceive the things differently, not only on a visual level but primarily in my consciousness. My other inspiration is literature. I strive my photography to be like a poem rather than a set of nice but empty sentences.

What are your influences?

Definitely the world where I have been brought up – Eastern Europe. Among photographers that influences my work I would name those that produce series of images with a certain lyric sensibility: Clare Richardson, Adam Jeppesen, Karin Apollonia Müller, Sophie Ristelhueber, Alec Soth, Guy Tillim and Jem Southam.

Why did you choose these photos?

I do not have any work that I would consider to be complete, my mind is still wandering among different ideas that slowly start to crystallize. The photographs that I selected come from my documentary work on the Upper Silesia (region in Poland), that I intend to complete later this year.

What does photography mean to you?

This is an outlet for my creative forces that I can barely apply in my professional work in a commercial environment.
