Interview Karl Erik Brøndbo

Photography is the only thing I’m good at.

Name: Karl Erik Brøndbo
Hometown: A small village called Høylandet in the middle of Norway
Style of photography: I have no idea. Cinematic? Fooling around?
Type of camera(s): Nikon D700, Contax T3, Holga
Website: Flickr

What gives you inspiration?

Too much coffee? At least that is how ideas emerge from nothing when I’m sleepless at night because of too much caffeine. I worked as a TV photographer in news and documentaries for many years, and perhaps that is why I have come to notice and search for details around me? Attending film school and having access to a lot of light, studios and faces is also inspirational.

What are your influences?

Film photographers. And photographers such as Tim Walker, Gregory Crewdson and Philip-Lorca diCorcia who have a filmatic touch to their pictures.

Why did you choose these photos?

It is a waste of time to look for symbolics or meaning in my pictures because it is not intentional. But these four have a nice feeling to them, I think.

What does photography mean to you?

It is the only thing I’m good at. Placing things harmonically in a square frame. For instance, I can spend a whole day dragging a sofa, lamps, a smoke machine and hundreds of meters of cable just to take ONE picture, which shall not be used for anything. It is just fun to take it.
