Interview Kate Fowler

Photography provides a way of pursuing the constant, fleeting beauty of life.

Name: Kate Fowler
Hometown: Fredericksburg/Richmond, Virginia
Style of photography: Hopeful! I feel like I am always taking a risk when using and developing film. Will the film be exposed? Will I roll it incorrectly, over-develop it? I don’t use a light meter with my main camera, so it’s a lot of trial and error.
Type of camera(s): Bronica Zenza & Yashica D (6×6), Pentax MEsuper & Spotmatic (35mm)
Website: katefowler.carbonmade.com, www.briefscenes.com

What gives you inspiration?

Nostalgia and memory; the remnants of homes, families and relationships. Exploration, curiosity, and light!

What are your influences?

Experimentation, film, and light. Artists that inspire me are Sally Mann, Francesca Woodman, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Tim White, and Jan Saudek.

Why did you choose these photos?

They are imperfect and personal, the most recent steps in a constantly expanding style (and understanding) of photography.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography provides a way of pursuing the constant, fleeting beauty of life. It’s an inherently sensitive medium which can be more influenced by its environment than by its operator. It is this sensitivity that I am attracted to.
