Interview Christian Pitschl

Photography helps me travel back in time.

Name: Christian Pitschl
Hometown: Bolzano/Bozen, Italy
Style of photography: Snapshots
Type of camera(s): Oh various kinds. SLRs on 35mm and medium format. Film only.

What gives you inspiration?

Hmmm I’m not exactly sure. There’s the aesthetic part that attracts me, so I’m searching for light, interesting faces and scenes I can’t remember having seen before. Then there is this idea of having a photographic diary as I sometimes feel like I don’t remember stuff as well as others do. So intense shots that sum up nice adventures bring me back in time really quickly.

What are your influences?

I love so many photographers and I think it’d be unfair just to name a few. I spend quite some time on Flickr and the websites of people I admire, so my influence can probably seen best at my favorites list on Flickr :-) . One thing that I’ve realized is that probably 70% – 80% percent of the pictures I like most these days have been shot by women.

Why did you choose these photos?

I’m not sure. I find it pretty hard to choose pictures as I usually think that a series of pictures of the same type has a stronger effect than single shots summed up. At the same time I’m still trying to find my “style” (if there even exists something like that without being too restrictive) so it’s very hard for me not to choose single shots, so I’ll just go with that.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography means very much to me. From the time my parents stopped shooting film I don’t really have pictures of myself and my friends growing up. Especially the time from 13 to 19 exists now only in my memory and on a few press and stage pictures of the punk rock band I was in. From the moment I started shooting a few years ago, it feels like an important period in my life. Moving out of my family’s house, relocating from Italy to Vienna, finding new friends and many experiences is finally documented. I love that as my memory is not that good as I said before and the pictures help me travel back in time.
