What gives you inspiration?

Lately I’m inspired by the idea of constantly staying on the move. As an MFA student in Portland, Oregon, I’m still new to the Pacific Northwest so there’s always somewhere further to explore. I’ve driven somewhere close to 9,000 miles in the past year and a half with trips between Texas and Oregon and exploring this latest area I’m calling home. I feel as long as you’re putting yourself out into the world then you’re bound to run across something that catches your eye.

What are your influences?

I’ve recently been researching painting, color theory, still life, Gerhard Richter, Abstractionism, Alfred Stieglitz’s Equivalents, various Flickr and Tumblr sites, Wolfgang Tillmans, military-sized smoke bombs, geometry, the breaking up of photos into halves and thirds, road movies, Terrence Malick, and the gps in my car.

Why did you choose these photos?

This was a tough one. After I went back to look at my work I felt that I wanted the four images to kind of represent a variety of what I’ve been doing the past few months. They don’t necessarily fit together but do touch on some variety of themes I’m seeing showing up in my work.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is my take on the world. It’s an individualized vision on anything you want it to be. I like the idea that it’s my viewpoint and no one may ever see that same image out in the world again.
