What gives you inspiration?
I am mostly drawn to what I find familiar, be it the local landscape, moments around my home or spaces that carry a personal significance. I suppose it is often what I see on a regular basis or what I can find relatable in new situations. I am also constantly inspired by the work of my peers. More than ever I feel the importance of being part of a community of artists.
What are your influences?
Many of the turn of the century landscape photographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan resonate for me. Not only are their images beautiful, but the sense of adventure and the physical feat of capturing their images is incredible to me. I also love the work of Mark Klett, Robert Adams, Lee Friedlander and Lois Conner, as well as the films of Terrence Malick. This last year, a friend reintroduced me to the works of artist Sean Scully and I find his writings about the artistic process and art in general very influential.
Why did you choose these photos?
I just recently went through the process of editing the photographs I’ve been taking for the last year. These images are part of a group that I’ve come to see as the most personal and the closest to the direction I’d like to take my photographs in the future.
What does photography mean to you?
For me, it is about slowing down and noticing that moment when you find something beautiful. It is about documenting and this funny desire to want to preserve how you are seeing what is unfolding around you. It is a language, a way to communicate what it feels like to be in a certain space at a certain time.
