What gives you inspiration?

I will always be inspired by human emotion and relationships. I find myself always trying to capture moments and feelings that cannot be expressed through words. However, most recently I find myself inspired by my current environment. I have lived in a small rural community in western New York for the past four years and have grown to be extremely intrigued by the landscape that is entirely different from what I am used to. I haven’t explored this much yet, but I plan to start focusing on rural and suburban landscapes and environmental portraits of those who live in such communities.

What are your influences?

Most recently I have become very inspired by the New Topographics photographers, but there is also Gregory Crewdson, Jen Davis, Katy Grannan, Lorna Simpson, Todd Hiddo, Robert Frank, Emmet Gowin…the list really could go on forever.

Why did you choose these photos?

Because I love them.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is the ultimate source of communication. One doesn’t need to know how to read, write or speak any language to understand or have an emotional response to a photograph. I am in awe of the power of photography; it has interwoven our world in such a way that instead of reading or hearing about an event in another country you can actually see it, and that seeing brings us closer.
