Interview Thijs groot Wassink and Ruben Lundgren

I’m thrilled by the way photographs have this special relationship with the world as we see it.

I’ve interviewed Thijs and Ruben about a year ago. This were their answers at that time:

Names: WassinkLundgren (Thijs groot Wassink and Ruben Lundgren)
Hometown: London and Beijing.
Style of photography: Conceptual documentary photography.
Type of camera(s): Anything that captures images and suits the subject.
Website: www.wassinklundgren.com & www.wassinklundgren.com/bookshop.html

What gives you inspiration?

Funny and intelligent people. Especially when they create beautiful things or have amazing stories to tell.

What are your influences?

We get influenced by a lot of people on a lot of different levels. If my girlfriend says she really likes something I probably get influenced by that too. But to name someone who’s been on our minds lately: we both really love the work and life of Ai Weiwei. His clear vision and the way he’s larger than life (no pun intended here) are some things that really strike me.

Why did you choose these photos?

I’m often most excited by our latest work. The images shown here come from our most recent body of work, titled Tokyo Tokyo. For this work we have been roaming the streets of Tokyo while photographing passers-by simultaneously. Diptych views of everyday situations, if you like.

What does photography mean to you?

I’m thrilled by the way photographs have this special relationship with the world as we see it; by the way we still look at them as some sort of proof of what happened. Apart from that, photography just happens to be the output of our thinking and playing with what we see around us.
